Apple head chihuahua ? Chihuahuas are beautiful dogs with excellent personalities. They make great companions no wonder many people love them.
This dog breed consists of two unofficial types called Apple Head Chihuahua and Deer Head Chihuahua. Well, note that there are only two official categories of Chihuahua; long coat and smooth coat. Dog clubs say that as per breed standard, a Chihuahua should have an apple-shaped head. Today will talk about Apple Head Chihuahuas and how to care for them.
What Makes an Apple Head Chihuahua Unique?
This dog has a round head shaped like an apple. He also has a 90 degrees stop angle where his muzzle meets with his forehead hence make an excellent L shaped when viewed from the profile. Apart from that, this dog is distinctive. Also, he has a shorter neck with a longer jawline compared to the Deer Head.
Additionally, these dogs have shorter legs and bulging eyes. All Apple Head puppies have a small opening in their head called molera that closes when they reach three or four months old. Note that only this breed type is accepted for the show.
Apple Head Chihuahua Appearance
Well, although the deer head and apple head Chihuahuas have huge differences, they also share some similarities. For example, they are both tiny dogs that don’t weigh more than six pounds and only stand between 5-8 inches tall. Therefore, even when a Chihuahua is fully grown, he’ll still appear quite small. Also, both these types come with either long or smooth coat. Common coat colors include white, black, chocolate, gold, fawn, and cream. Apple Head Chihuahuas also have erect ears, protruding eyes, expressive faces and are more intelligent.
Apple Head Chihuahua Temperament
His temperament is quite adorable. Generally, Chihuahuas are pleasant small dogs who charm their way into people’s hearts. But, they need proper socialization when still young along with lots of training. Remember that he is naturally intelligent. So, if not well trained, they can be a bit bossy.
Also, although he fits well in families with older children, experts don’t recommend him for very little children. That’s because of his small size, plus, he is fragile.
Health Concerns and Life Expectancy
He can live up to 14-16 years. But, compared to Deer Head Chihuahuas, this breed has more health concerns. Well, both types can be prone to heart complications like mitral valve disease, patent ductus arteriosus, etc. They also can get eye conditions like idiopathic epilepsy, patellar luxation among others.
But, because of his apple-shaped dome head and his sharp 90-degree angle, an Apple Head Chihuahua can get Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome that causes breathing problems like snoring, difficulty, discomfort, sleep apnea, etc.
Your dog can also experience dental as well as ocular issues such as eye injury or infection because of his protruding eyes and skull shape.
Training Needs of Apple Head Chihuahua
As we’ve earlier said, this breed needs thorough obedience training and socialization while he is still young to ensure that he grows into an adorable well-behaved adult. Usually, Chihuahuas test your patience. He, therefore, needs a gentle, loving, and firm owner to keep him in check. We advise that you use the positive reward system when training your dog. He’s keen to please you hence will not want to do anything disappointing. Therefore, he’s going to respond to the cues you give him as he wants to make you happy.
In terms of exercise, he’ll need a moderate amount of daily exercise. Don’t be fooled by his small size. He is a very energetic and active dog who’ll enjoy playing in a fenced backyard or running with you. Also, incorporate brisk walks into their exercise routine.
We recommend high-quality food that’s specific to their age, weight, and level of activity for small dogs. Any food with meat protein is good for your Apple Head Chihuahua. Also, make sure that the food is specified for smaller dogs since larger ones need different nutrition. You should also provide fresh water for your pet every day. And although we encourage using treats during training, keep them minimal since they usually contain many calories.
Well, Apple Head Chihuahuas are an excellent breed for almost everyone. But, he may not be a good choice for someone who has very young kids or those who don’t have enough time and patience for training him. If you want to buy an Apple Head Chihuahua, expect to pay anywhere between $500 and over $10,000 to a breeder. But, ensure that you get a certificate from your breeder proving that the dog is healthy and ready for purchasing.
