Generally, one of these conditions is what is causing your dog’s eye pain, and a veterinarian can also once diagnosed can begin #treatment plans immediately.

Symptoms of Dog Eye Pain and Issues

If an #allergic reaction is suspected, which could be seasonal or caused by #environmental situations.

If this is suspected as the cause, your vet can prescribe antihistamines to help your dog’s eyes feel more comfortable.

This will require a visit to your vet for a prescription or perhaps they may suggest an over-the-counter script if they think the allergic reaction is only mild.

Complete Examination of Dog Eye Pain

The next thing to check is if it’s a foreign object.

My dog cant open his eyes and it may be as simple as only a hair.

But this is something you can do yourself with help.

My dog can’t open his eyes and check the eye or eyes in good light, if your dog is in pain or pulls away then let the professionals do the job.

If it is something that has penetrated your dog’s eye then an #extensive examination is required.

Do not remove the object yourself. It’s time to let the professionals do their job and safeguard your dog’s eyesight.

Your vet will remove the object while your dog is sedated or under a #local anesthetic.

There are some conditions in which your dog’s eyes may be irritated such as #chronic inflammation, #dry eyes, #eye infections, or a mild case of #ectropion.

   Corneal Ulcers in dogs

A more serious condition is #Corneal Ulcers which are very painful, this is why dogs will often close their eyes or keep them covered.

Actions your dog may take to relieve the pain from their eyes.

Look out for your dog licking its eyes, having # swollen eyes, or rubbing his or her face on furniture or carpet.

A dog with corneal ulcers also might keep his eyes closed.

Keeping one eye closed in dogs

In addition to holding one eye shut, you may see your dog either squinting or keeping its eyes closed entirely.

This is their way of dealing with the pain.

Your dog may also have some puss or crusting developing inside or around its eyes.

If your dog shuts his eyes, and it stays like this for several hours without opening them.

If you see green eye fluids or mucus, your dog might be suffering from conjunctivitis.

Now you might be called upon to administer eye drops to your dog.

Ask your vet for the best way to do this. But if you are on your own here are my suggestions.

   Administer – open eyes

You can stand over your dog straddling him. Then hold his or her head reach down and hold the eye open.

But doing it this way can be very intimidating for some dogs.

Another choice But only do this way if it’s absolutely necessary.

Make your comfortable by laying them down on the floor or a bed then lying beside him to his side.

When you’re opening the eye you want to just very gently don’t hold your dog firmly the more nervous that you are your dog is  going to feel that and sense that he’s

gonna become nervous if you’re using a lot of force that’s gonna make him very nervous you wanna be relaxed and calmed make sure you’re very gentle with your dog

   Gently raise your dog’s eyes

Now pick up his face with your thumb on the top eyelid and your pointer finger on the bottom eyelid take the dropper and drop a couple of drops in
that eye.

Then when you’re done just close the eye and gently massage it in so you’re not putting any pressure on the eye.

So once you’re done make sure you’ve got a treat handy. Praise your dog for a job well done.

If things get out of hand and my dog cant open his eyes. what should I do.

Try again but if your dog starts to bite or act aggressively toward you. You might have to consider a muzzle.

Of course, this is the last resort tactic.

Congratulations. You’re done till next time.
